Chipman Pet Vet • September 11, 2019

You and your four-legged friend could really enjoy and benefit from visits to an off leash dog park in the KC area! Spending time at one of our many local dog parks will help your dog burn off energy so he or she will not act out in negative ways.

At the dog park, your pet will have opportunities to socialize with other dogs, enjoy a dog run and spend time off the leash. Moreover, you can connect with other dog owners. It will be marvelous to enjoy the day with fresh air, exercise, and your favorite pooch.

Proper Dog Park Etiquette

If you have not been to an off leash dog park, you should know that there is proper dog park etiquette and rules to follow, as there are with most social gatherings. Local dog parks may have regulations specific to their park, but there are general guidelines for all dog parks to keep everyone happy.

Follow the link below to get a good understanding of proper dog park etiquette before you look into the list of parks available.

It is safe to bring your puppy to the dog park, as long as their vaccinations are up-to-date. Chipman Road Animal Clinic can make sure your vaccinations are covered and will offer advice about taking your pup to the pet park.

What to Look for in a Good Dog Park

You might consider scouting out the dog park first before bringing your dog to see for yourself what this particular park has to offer and if you think it is a good fit.

The following are things to keep in mind when looking for an off-leash dog park :

  • Is the dog park clean? Are dog waste bags provided and rules posted to keep the area clear of waste?
  • Are rules enforced concerning vaccinations for dog visitors?
  • How much space is offered? Is there enough space to run as well as stay away from grouchy individuals?
  • Are some hours of the day more crowded at the dog park than others?
  • Are there separate play areas for different sized dogs?
  • What kind of ground cover is provided at the dog park? Concrete can get hot for paws in the summer.
  • Are the dog owners using the park responsible? You can get a feel for this by observation during busy times.
  • Is the fencing strong, safe (no sharp points) and able to contain small and large dogs?

Try a Few Dog Parks Out

Now that you know what is available and what to look for in a dog park, try a few out. You may find a couple of favorite dog parks to frequent, and your dog may find a few friends along the way. They say owning a pet is good for your health and can help you live longer. Exercise is healthy both physically and mentally for both you and your dog. Enjoy the dog park together and you will both be happy and healthy!
