Finding a bump or lump on your dog can be worrisome to a dog owner’s heart when you know cancer in dogs is a possibility. Lumps and bumps are possible signs of cancer in dogs, so it’s always wise to have them checked out just to be sure there’s nothing to be concerned about. Having them checked is important because early detection of tumors in dogs is vital when it comes to working towards the best possible outcome for many cancers and tumors.
The veterinarian world is continuously striving for new discoveries that will benefit and improve our beloved dogs’ health, this includes trying to find a cancer treatment for dogs that’s both safe and effective. Last December in 2020 Torigen Pharmaceuticals Inc., an animal health biologics company, announced preliminary positive results that support the therapeutic potential of their Experimental Autologous Cancer Vaccine in treating some types of cancer.
Torigen’s vaccine findings have been incredibly promising across several different types of cancerous dog tumors, with many benefits. If you think your dog may have cancer or has been recently diagnosed, Torigen’s new treatment could be the ideal path to take. Cancer in dogs doesn’t have to mean the end of your beloved pet.
Torigen’s initial research in 2020 completed a retrospective analysis of outcomes based on three treatment aspects: dogs with stage III HSA having been treated with surgery alone, dog tumors removed in surgery followed by a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) chemotherapy, and dogs having surgery followed by Torigen’s Autologous Cancer Vaccine. The recent publication of their findings revealed a more than three-fold increase in the survival rate of dogs with cancer that were treated with the Autologous Cancer Vaccine over dogs receiving surgery to remove tumors in dogs alone.
While the median survival time of the dogs with cancer receiving the vaccination was equivalent to the dogs being treated with the MTD chemotherapy, the vaccinated dogs did not report any adverse effects. The one-year survival rate was 12.5% for the dogs receiving the Torigen vaccination compared to the 0% for dogs with cancer treated by surgery alone OR surgery followed by the MTD chemotherapy.
Approximately 8 million pets develop cancer every year in the United States alone. Torigen’s immunotherapy is truly a game-changer for pet owners when finding signs of cancer in dogs. This vaccine is a form of active immunotherapy which triggers your dog’s own immune system to fight the cancer. It is an advantageous, personalized vaccine treatment, that not only:
Even though Torigen’s new treatment is relatively new to the industry, it has shown promising results of reducing and even eliminating 40 different types of cancerous dog tumors in over 600 patients.
Though prospective clinical trials are set to begin in 2021, Torigen’s Autologous Cancer Vaccine is available currently to veterinarians across the United States as an experimental cancer treatment for dogs to be regulated by the USDA. If you think your dog may have cancer, the first step is to make an appointment with your vet so they can evaluate the lump and test it to get an accurate diagnosis. If you end up receiving the unfortunate news of cancer, you and your vet can discuss all your possible options, including Torigen’s newest vaccine.
If Torigen’s Autologous Cancer Vaccine is decided upon, then treatment begins by removing a small piece of your dog’s tumor, then using that to create a personalized vaccine. Over the course of three weeks, your dog will receive a weekly dose of the vaccine. The vaccine then re-educates the body’s immune system so that it will recognize the cancer as foreign and then attack it. Post-treatment care is followed closely by both your veterinarian as well as Torigen Pharmaceuticals. You’ll be guided and informed every step of the way.
